Bill Skarsgård Will Star In The Crow Reboot From Rupert Sanders

A few years after his last appearance as Pennywise the Dancing Clown, Bill Skarsgård is opening a fresh jar of makeup to play another supernatural character. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Skarsgård has been chosen to headline a reboot of The Crow, with Rupert Sanders sitting in the director’s chair.

Hollywood has been scrambling to produce a new live-action take on The Crow for nearly 20 years. The original 1994 film starring Brandon Lee (who was famously killed during production) was a critical and box office success. However, it was followed by a string of subpar sequels, the last of which went direct-to-video in 2005.

Since then, various filmmakers have tried to resurrect the franchise, including Stephen Norrington and F. Javier Gutiérrez, the latter of whom cast Luke Evans in the title role in 2013. Unfortunately, Evans dropped out two years later. Most recently, director Corin Hardy and Jason Momoa attempted to get their own version off the ground before it fell apart in 2018. Test footage of Momoa in costume surfaced online last November.

Zach Baylin, who just received an Oscar nod for writing King Richard, is penning the script for the reboot. And unlike the sequels to Lee’s movie, which introduced new characters who assumed the mantle of The Crow, Skarsgård is playing Eric Draven in the film. Production will begin this June in Prague and Munich with a budget of around $50 million. Edward R. Pressman and Malcolm Gray are both onboard as producers.

Aside from his breakout role in the It films, Skarsgård has shown up in Deadpool 2, The Devil All the Time, Eternals, and Nine Days. He also starred in Netflix’s Hemlock Grove series and is currently filming John Wick: Chapter 4. Meanwhile, Sanders previously directed Snow White and the Huntsman and Ghost in the Shell. Last year, he helmed an episode of Apple TV+’s Foundation.
