Oscar Isaac Says Metal Gear Solid Movie is Still Looking For the Story

In December 2020, Oscar Isaac landed the role of Solid Snake in the long-awaited Metal Gear Solid movie. Just to give you an idea of how long it’s been, the first MGS game came out in 1998 for the original PlayStation. But so far, Hollywood hasn’t been able to crack it and there have been few updates since Isaac was cast. During the premiere of Moon Knight, Isaac offered IGN some brief remarks about the status of the film. And it doesn’t sound like it’s made a lot of progress.

“We’re searching, we’re searching like Solid Snake,” said Isaac. “We’re climbing through air ducts, we’re looking for the story.”

That isn’t exactly encouraging because Hideo Kojima’s MSG games are revered for their stories, especially the first one. Certain changes always need to be made for the live-action medium. But the story is already there. It’s when Hollywood tries to “improve” upon the original games that we get disappointing remakes like Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City, Mortal Kombat, and Tomb Raider. The creative team behind those reboots failed to recognize the aspects of the games that excited fans in the first place.

Regardless, director Jordan Vogt-Roberts was still very enthusiastic about bringing MSG to the big screen during an interview with EW last year. But even then, Vogt-Roberts acknowledged that it has been very difficult getting the film made.

Metal Gear is something I’ve been trying to Sisyphus push up the hill for seven-plus years,” said Vogt-Roberts. “That game and Kojima-san’s world mean the world to me, and that’s something that I’m very proud of what we’re doing. I think it’s very Kojima, punk rock, twisty… Those aren’t one-to-one translations. So, I think you really need to understand when playing a game what it elicits from you, why it makes you feel certain ways, what the tone that it evokes is.”

The Metal Gear Solid movie is currently in development by Sony Pictures. However, the project doesn’t have a release date or a time frame for the start of production.
