Godzilla vs. Kong Sequel Will Begin Production In Australia Later This Year

Despite being released day-and-date in theaters and on HBO Max, Godzilla vs. Kong was one of 2021’s box office success stories. And now, that story will continue with a new Godzilla vs. Kong sequel. Via Deadline, the next movie in Legendary Entertainment’s MonsterVerse will shoot in Queensland, Australia later this year. The first Godzilla vs. Kong and Kong: Skull Island were also shot in Queensland.

The government of Australia may have jumped the gun here, because Legendary and Warner Bros. have yet to formally announce the sequel. It’s also unknown which cast members will return, and what the story may be about. Throughout the first film, Godzilla and King Kong fought for dominance among the Titans. However, they ultimately joined forces to defeat Mechagodzilla. The movie ended with an uneasy truce between Godzilla and Kong, with the great ape returning to the Hollow Earth.

Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard has previously suggested that the next film could explore the history of the Hollow Earth and delve into the origins of the Titans themselves. And since Kong is now essentially the ruler of the Hollow Earth, that’s a logical next step.

Additionally, there is a separate MonsterVerse project that has no involvement with Warner Bros. Pictures. Back in January, Legendary announced that AppleTV+ is developing a Godzilla spinoff. The proposed show was created by Chris Black and comic book writer Matt Fraction. According to the early reports, that show will follow “one family’s journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch.”

Assuming the Australian government’s timetable is correct, formal announcements about the sequel’s director and cast should be made soon.
