Since at least Batman Returns, movie superhero franchises have consistently changed up the hero’s costume in each sequel, or at least added a new variant. The cynic might suggest it’s a way to sell more toys. Artists, however, could counter that sometimes technology improves, and sometimes costumes can become more efficient for filming. Whatever the reason, as revealed back in June, Shazam! Fury of the Gods sees Billy Batson and family get new duds for the super-identities. While still the same basic design, a closer look reveals new texture details and the like.
Today, Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg took to Twitter to explain the changes. Or, perhaps, decline to explain them, depending how one reads it.:
Shazam 2 never addresses why their suits are different now. If anyone would ask my plan was to say it’s because Barry messed with the timeline but now we come out before Flash so I’ll say the wizard did it.
Pro filmmaking tip: Put a wizard in your movie to be CinemaSins proof.

Now that that’s cleared up, we still wonder if the new sequel will address what their superhero names actually are. They can’t use “The Marvels,” as that’s the name of a whole different superhero movie. But if they all address each other as “Shazam,” they’ll change back into kids. Maybe the “Captain Sparklefingers” family can become canon as a moniker?
What do you think of Sandberg’s response? Let us know in comments!
