Doctor Strange 2 Producer Teases America Chavez’s Role in the Film

The next generation of Marvel heroes has been leaving its mark on the MCU ever since Phase Four kicked off last year. But one of the most powerful new additions to the franchise is about to make her debut in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The long-awaited sequel will introduce Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez, a relative newcomer to Marvel’s comic book universe who made her first appearance in 2011. However, America’s unique abilities made her a solid fit for Stephen Strange’s next big-screen adventure. America Chavez’s role.

Production and development manager Richie Palmer discussed America’s role in the movie while speaking with Disney’s D23 magazine (via The Direct). In the comics, America’s powers allow her to cross from one plane of existence to another. So when Marvel began hashing out its plans for a live-action multiverse, her gateway into the MCU was an easy decision.

“America is someone we’ve been trying to get into the MCU for a long time,” revealed Palmer. “This felt like the best place to do it, because ‘Multiverse’ is in the title and her powers specifically have to do with the Multiverse – her powers being that she can punch open doorways to other universes. That’s something we haven’t seen in our movies, a character who can actually walk from one universe to another. That’s maddening in itself for characters such as Doctor Strange and Wong, whose jobs are to protect those barriers.”

Gomez also teased her character’s relationship with Strange in the film. Having an all-access pass to multiple realities is very much in the Sorcerer Supreme’s wheelhouse. But it sounds like Strange will eventually come to appreciate her unwillingness to give up in the face of a challenge.

“He naturally wants to know more about her,” said Gomez. “With America, she just keeps going, especially when things are going wrong – and everything is going completely wrong for her. She’s running away from her uniqueness, until she learns to embrace it. She just never loses hope, and I can relate to that. She’s aspirational that way.”

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will hit theaters on May 6.
