There’s something not quite right about Chip and Dale. The high-pitched squeaky voices are gone, replaced by John Mulaney and Andy Samberg. And they’ve moved on from their heyday as successful Rescue Rangers, into a live-action real world where Toons can get CG makeovers. If it all seems very Roger Rabbit, well…there’s Roger Rabbit himself to make the comparison. And the cats from Cats, sort of? It’s not quite the Disney Afternoon show you remember, as The Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaffer directs this new meta take on two old cartoon favorites.

In addition to Mulaney and Samberg, Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers includes a star-studded, comedian-heavy supporting cast that includes KiKi Layne, Will Arnett, Eric Bana, Flula Borg, Dennis Haysbert, Keegan-Michael Key, Tress MacNeille, Tim Robinson, Seth Rogen, J.K. Simmons, and Chris Parnell.

Here’s the official synopsis: “Chip and Dale are living amongst cartoons and humans in modern-day Los Angeles, but their lives are quite different now. It has been decades since their successful television series was canceled, and Chip (voice of Mulaney) has succumbed to a life of suburban domesticity as an insurance salesman. Dale (voice of Samberg), meanwhile, has had CGI surgery and works the nostalgia convention circuit, desperate to relive his glory days. When a former cast mate mysteriously disappears, Chip and Dale must repair their broken friendship and take on their Rescue Rangers detective personas once again to save their friend’s life.”
Disney also released a teaser poster, which you can see below. The movie premieres direct-to-streaming May 20.
