Emperor Zurg Attacks in the Trailer for Disney and Pixar’s Lightyear

He’s definitely not a toy any more. While nobody flat-out says the name of the giant robot villain in the new trailer for Lightyear, any Pixar fan will recognize that Zurg silhouette. The latest feature film adventure for Buzz Lightyear takes the approach that within the Pixar universe, this movie spawned the TV cartoon and toy line beloved by Andy and so many other kids.

Numerous visual references to classic sci-fi abound, from dilithium-ish crystals to 2001: A Space Odyssey‘s lunar lander. What we don’t see? The little green aliens from the Pizza Planet vending machine, who became canon to Buzz’s 2D animated adventures, but didn’t seem initially related. That’s definitely Zurg in the silhouette above, though. He may lack a cape, but the three-barrel blaster arm stands out.

Peter Sohn, director of The Good Dinosaur, voices Sox the robot cat, while Keke Palmer, Dale Soules and Taika Waititi play “a group of ambitious recruits,” names unspecified. Uzo Aduba, James Brolin, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Efren Ramirez and Isiah Whitlock Jr also voice undisclosed roles, with nobody officially announced for Zurg yet. Chris Evans follows in the animated footsteps of Tim Allen and Patrick Warburton as a more heroic — but still occasionally comedic– Buzz Lightyear.

Disney and Pixar also debuted a new poster today. Take a gander:
