Cumberbatch & Holland Asked For a Doctor Strange/Spider-Man Team-Up

During Avengers: Infinity War, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange had a team-up with Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), as well as other Marvel heroes. Despite only briefly appearing together in Avengers: Endgame, Cumberbatch and Holland apparently wanted more Doctor Strange and Spider-Man adventures. During an interview posted on Variety, Cumberbatch revealed that he and Holland asked for a Doctor Strange/Spider-Man reunion before Spider-Man: No Way Home came together.

“I’m very spoiled because Tom Holland and I had petitioned that the neighborhood superheroes should cross paths again,” said Cumberbatch. “To have those three films culminate in that moment was extraordinary to be a part of. And to let my character make some hefty mistakes out of love — really, out of generosity towards someone he realizes he really cares for.”

Cumberbatch also shared his feelings about No Way Home‘s success and what it means for the movies in general.

“From a stand-alone success of a movie, of a franchise, it’s phenomenal,” noted Cumberbatch. “I genuinely sat there entertained, thrilled, really moved. I laughed a lot, I cheered. It’s a fantastic feeling to be back in a cinema, being able to do that and to prove that not everything has to be streamed. And I think that’s important moving forward. It’s not just for exhibitors but for the social gain, the excitement of being in a crowd of people experiencing that live thing of watching it.”

Cumberbatch’s character will return on May 6 in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. There are some rumors that suggest Spidey may appear in that film as well, but nothing concrete at this time.
