Masters of the Universe Moves To Netflix With Kyle Allen as the New He-Man

After months of uncertainty surrounding Mattel’s live-action Masters of the Universe reboot, the project has a new home and a new leading man. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the long-gestating film has changed hands from Sony to Netflix. Additionally, Kyle Allen has signed on to play He-Man.

Allen is replacing Noah Centineo, who was cast as He-Man in 2019 before leaving the film last April. Most recently, Allen appeared in West Side Story and was also part of the main cast of Hulu’s The Path from 2016-2018. He also played a leading role in last year’s The Map of Tiny Perfect Things and previously recurred on FX’s American Horror Story: Apocalypse. Next up, Allen will appear in Rosaline, a new spin on the classic Romeo and Juliet story.

Sony was first reported to be considering selling Masters of the Universe to Netflix in late 2019. However, the sale wasn’t made official until today. The streamer is already home to a few other MotU properties, including Kevin Smith’s Masters of the Universe: Revelation series and the CG-animated He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

Despite these changes, The Nee Brothers are still attached to direct Masters of the Universe. They are also getting some extra help on the script from Dave Callaham, who previously worked on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Mortal Kombat, and Wonder Woman 1984. Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch are producing the film alongside DeVon Franklin. Robbie Brenner and Kevin McKeon will oversee the movie for Mattel Films.

Masters of the Universe will begin filming this summer. Netflix hasn’t announced a release date.
