Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Marks ‘The End’ For This Group of Heroes

The cast and crew of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 are currently in Atlanta shooting the cosmic superheroes’ newest big-screen adventure. And while James Gunn has long said that the film ends the trilogy that began with the original Guardians installment in 2014, it’s hard to rule out the possibility of future installments. But if Marvel does decide to revisit the team at some point down the line, we can probably expect some new members to join their ranks.

Gunn offered a Guardians 3 update during a recent appearance on Deadline’s Hero Nation podcast. While discussing the shoot, he said the filming experience was “like Frogger dodging Omicron” due to COVID restrictions. But he also confirmed that the sequel will be the last time we see these particular heroes sharing the screen together.

“This is the end for us,” said Gunn. “This is the last time people will see this team of Guardians. […] It’s big. It’s so, so big and dark, and different from what people might be expecting it to be.”

Gunn is also “very aware that the third film in most trilogies [usually] sucks,” but he still wants to end the characters’ story on a high note. And when asked if the final chapter feels like “a breakup,” he insisted this isn’t the case.

“It doesn’t feel like that,” continued Gunn “The truth is, I’m such close friends with so many of these people. They’re a part of my life, much outside of Guardians. It’s not like when Guardians is done, I won’t see Chris and Dave and Pom and Karen and Zoe. I mean, they’re a part of my life. So it doesn’t really feel like a breakup. I just want to be true to the characters, and I want to be true to the story, and I want to give people the wrap-up that they deserve for the story. That is always a little bit scary, but I’m doing my best.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will arrive on May 5, 2023.
