In comics, anything is possible, but in live-action movies, sometimes leaps must be explained. Like, how does a woman in a catsuit pose a physical threat to a man in a suit of armor shaped like a bat? In a new interview with Empire, Zoe Kravitz explains how she developed Catwoman‘s fighting style for The Batman movie. She had to figure out a way to look like a danger to Robert Pattinson, and the biggest clue came in her character name.
“We watched cats and lions and how they fight,” she says, “and talked about what is actually possible when you’re my size, and Batman’s so much stronger than me. What is my skill? It’s being fast and tricky. So we did some really interesting floor work that incorporated different kinds of martial arts and capoeira and a kind of feline, dance-like movement.”

She worked with stunt coordinator Rob Alonzo to get it right, and praises his training. Of his choreography for her, she says that it’s “not just trying to do a bunch of impressive backflips that wouldn’t be possible for that person to do, and he takes into account where we are in the story and where the characters are emotionally. So it was really fun to work from that place.”
Sounds pretty whip-smart.
