The Original Matrix Hits IMAX Screens Next Month

Moviegoers are just one month away from returning to the machines’ simulated reality in The Matrix Resurrections. But before the new installment hits theaters, Warner Bros. is giving fans the chance to revisit the original game-changing film like never before. The studio (via Collider) has shared plans to re-release The Matrix in IMAX theaters next month. These screenings will mark the first time that the film has been available to watch in this format.

The Matrix shook up the action genre when it arrived in the spring of 1999. Warner Bros. didn’t release its first IMAX movie until The Matrix Reloaded arrived in 2003. But now, fans can experience the original film’s revolutionary VFX shots in much higher resolution as Don Davis’ iconic score is blasted in glorious surround sound. In other words, it’s the perfect way to celebrate the franchise ahead of Resurrections‘ debut later in December.

The Matrix kicked off a truly singular film franchise that has continued to entertain audiences and influence the industry since 1999,” said Jeff Goldstein, president of Warner Bros. Pictures Domestic Distribution. “We’re thrilled to partner with IMAX on another first for the fans who’ve waited more than 20 years to see The Matrix in this format, and for moviegoers who will discover this incredible ongoing story for the first time, just in time for The Matrix Resurrections to hit theaters for the holidays.”

The Matrix’s IMAX screenings will take place in select theaters on Tuesday, December 7 and Wednesday, December 8. Additionally, Warner Bros. has released new key art for the event, which you can view below. The studio will release The Matrix Resurrections in theaters and on HBO Max on December 22.
