Harry Potter Reunion Special Hits HBO Max In January

HBO Max will ring in 2022 by adding yet another reunion special to its streaming library. To mark the anniversary of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, which hit U.S. theaters 20 years ago today, WarnerMedia (via Variety) announced that the original film’s cast and crew will gather together for a new retrospective called Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts. The special will premiere at midnight on January 1, 2022.

Return to Hogwarts will reunite several actors from across all eight films in the original Harry Potter series. That includes the starring trio of Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson. Chris Columbus, who directed the first two films in the franchise, will appear as well. According to HBO Max, viewers can expect “an enchanting making-of story through all-new, in-depth interviews and cast conversations.”

The special will also feature appearances by Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Ralph Fiennes, Jason Isaacs, Gary Oldman, Imelda Staunton, Tom Felton, James Phelps, Oliver Phelps, Mark Williams, Bonnie Wright, Alfred Enoch, Matthew Lewis, Evanna Lynch, and Ian Hart. An early look at the reunion will air during the premiere of Harry Potter: Hogwarts Tournament of Houses, a new game show launching on TBS and Cartoon Network on November 28.

Luckily, non-Max subscribers will have a chance to watch Return to Hogwarts on basic cable later in 2022. WarnerMedia is also planning to air the special on TBS and Cartoon Network sometime in the spring to coincide with the release of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, which hits theaters on April 15.

“It has been an incredible journey since the debut of the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone film, and witnessing how it has evolved into this remarkable interconnected universe has been magical to say the least,” said Tom Ascheim, president of Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics. “This retrospective is a tribute to everyone whose lives were touched by this cultural phenomenon — from the talented cast and crew who poured their heart and soul into this extraordinary film franchise to the passionate fans who continue to keep the Wizarding World spirit alive 20 years later.”

“There’s magic in the air here with this incredible cast, as they all return home to the original sets of Hogwarts, where they began 20 years ago,” added executive producer Casey Patterson. “The excitement is palpable as they prepare to take their fans on a very special and personal journey, through the making of these incredible films.”
