Mahershala Ali Discusses Developing His Take on Blade in the MCU

SPOILER WARNING: If you haven’t watched Eternals yet, you might want to read this later.

If you already know what happens in Chloé Zhao’s film, then you are aware that the Academy Award-winning director confirmed the cameo of “Mr. Blade” in the post-credit scene. Sure, it was just a voice cameo, but it marked the official debut of Mahershala Ali in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The dual Oscar-winner and Alita: Battle Angel alum will portray Blade in an upcoming stand-alone movie, and he’s more than thrilled about it.

“It was really cool, getting to do that,” he said of the Eternals scene, while talking with Empire. “It was scary. Because, you know, you’re talking before you’re filming it. I’m pretty particular about my choices, like most actors, and so having to make some choices – even with a line, vocally – this early on, it brought up some very real anxieties. And it made the job real. It’s like, ‘Okay, this is happening now’, you know, and that’s exciting.”

Fans might still have to wait for a while before seeing Ali donning the Daywalker’s leather jacket and sunglasses. At the time of writing, production on the film is yet to begin. Bassam Tariq is directing the movie from a story by Stacy Osei-Kuffour. The upcoming Blade won’t likely debut in Phase 4 of the MCU, but rather in Phase 5.
