Taika Waititi Will Adapt Ground-Breaking Jodorowsky Comic The Incal

Taika Waititi seems to enjoy sci-fi movies so much that he has already targeted his next contribution to the genre. The Thor: Ragnarok director will adapt Alejandro Jodorowsky and Moebius’ The Incal in a  feature produced by the graphic novel’s current publisher, Humanoids. The Academy Award-winning filmmaker will also work on the script with Jemaine Clement and Peter Warren. Briefly, The Incal follows the adventures of the protagonist, John Difool, who bumps into the Light Incal, a powerful crystal that protects those who believe in it. The story, originally released in the French magazine Metal Hurlant between 1980 and 1988, mixes political intrigues, intergalactic voyages, mysticism, and much more.

“The films and graphic novels of Alejandro Jodorowsky have influenced me and so many others for so long,” said Waititi in a press release. “I was stunned to be given the opportunity to bring his iconic characters to life and I am grateful to Alejandro, Fabrice and everyone at Humanoids for trusting me to do so.”

Jodorowsky wrote his work shortly after being attached to direct a Dune adaptation in 1975. The French director’s vision was far too ambitious for the time. However, some of the concepts and artwork from the abandoned project ended up in his graphic novel. Now 92, he can’t helm this film firsthand, but he’s happy with the producers’ choice for his substitute.

“When Humanoids’ CEO Fabrice Giger introduced me to Taika Waititi’s work, it became obvious to me that he was the one. I fully trust Taika’s creativity to give The Incal a stunning take, intimate and at the same time of cosmic proportions,” added Jodorowsky in the press release. Released in the ’70s, The Incal spawned an entire expanded comics universe, and inspired filmmakers like Luc Besson.

Producers have yet to announce an official release date for The Incal.
