Benedict Cumberbatch Confirms Reshoots on Doctor Strange 2

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was one of several Marvel movies that recently had their release dates pushed back to later in 2022. Instead of opening next March as previously expected, the highly-anticipated sequel will kick off the summer movie season in early May. And according to Benedict Cumberbatch, the filmmakers are going to use that extra time to iron out any lingering kinks before the movie hits theaters.

Cumberbatch recently dropped by the Today show to plug his new film, The Electrical Life of Louis Wain. But when the conversation inevitably steered toward Doctor Strange 2, he mentioned that the cast and crew will reconvene in November and December to film reshoots. As always, it’s key to remember that reshoots are a normal, healthy part of the production process. So fans shouldn’t read into this as Marvel suddenly doubting the viability of the finished product. After facing a number of setbacks due to COVID-19, production on the sequel finally got underway in London last November. Filming was originally supposed to begin over the summer, but the delay turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Screenwriter Michael Waldron later explained that he and director Sam Raimi used the shutdown to their advantage. In the long run, they ended up overhauling the script and re-tooling the story “from scratch.”

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will open in theaters on May 6, 2022.
