It’s no secret that Sony’s Venom movies play fast and loose with their comic book source material, particularly when it comes to Spider-Man’s role in the character’s origin. But earlier this week, the studio released a new clip from Venom: Let There Be Carnage that reveals yet another big change to the symbiote’s backstory. And longtime Marvel writer Donny Cates seems none too pleased about it.
Cates, alongside artist Ryan Stegman, recently wrapped up his run on Marvel’s primary Venom series with its landmark 200th issue. Throughout their time on the book, Cates and Stegman dived into the history of the symbiotes, tracing the race’s beginnings all the way back to the artificial planet known as Klyntar. That’s one of the reasons Cates takes issue with Sony’s latest preview for Let There Be Carnage. The clip in question finds Eddie bickering with Venom, claiming that his symbiotic other half was “kicked off the planet Ming-Mar” before his arrival on Earth.

With this, Cates appears to be joining a legion of fans dismayed by the films’ lack of faithfulness to the comics. Regardless, Sony remains committed to enhancing the series’ ties to the larger Marvel Universe at some point in the future.
Earlier this week, Let There Be Carnage director Andy Serkis confirmed that the studio is still building toward a big-screen clash between Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock and Spider-Man. But whether it’s Tom Holland’s Peter Parker under the mask remains to be seen.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage hits theaters on October 1.
