Simu Liu Thanks Shang-Chi’s Cast and Crew on Release Day

It’s been a long time coming, but Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is finally playing in theaters everywhere. Being the first major superhero movie to star an Asian lead character obviously comes with a great deal of pressure. But in the wake of the film’s premiere, Simu Liu has extended his gratitude to everyone who made this life-changing experience possible.

In a new post on Instagram, Liu once again explained what taking on the role of Shang-Chi means to him. More importantly, he reminded viewers what the movie means to the AAPI community as a whole, and the image he attached of two little kids watching one of his fights on the big screen certainly speaks volumes. Liu thanked Shang-Chi’s director, Destin Daniel Cretton, for pouring his heart and soul into the film’s production. He also singled out several of his co-stars in the film, including Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, and Michelle Yeoh for being so accommodating on the set.

And of course, he thanked all the fans who continue to welcome him into the larger Marvel family. You can read his full statement below.

During last night’s Thursday preview screenings, Shang-Chi raked in $8.8 million domestically. Although this isn’t as high as Black Widow’s $13.2 million opening earlier this year, the film is still moving ahead of expectations. According to Deadline, it’s currently tracking to make more than $60 million over the weekend.
