Adam Mazer is Writing a Biopic About Gene Roddenberry

If Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry was still alive, today would have been his 100th birthday. “The Great Bird of the Galaxy” passed away in 1991, but his franchise still endures. Now, Roddenberry Entertainment is developing a biopic about Roddenberry’s life.

Via Deadline, You Don’t Know Jack screenwriter Adam Mazer is writing the Roddenberry biopic. Gene’s son, Rod Roddenberry, is producing the film with Trevor Roth. Roddenberry and Roth also released a statement confirming the news.

“Gene led a remarkable life. He was an incredibly complex, compelling man, whose work changed the face of television, and whose ideas changed the world. It’s time to share Gene’s story with audiences everywhere.”

As noted by Deadline, Roddenberry’s life is an interesting story even without Star Trek. He was fighter pilot in World War II, and then a commercial pilot after. Roddenberry also survived two plane crashes, and he went on to be a police officer before breaking into television.

Roddenberry’s first Star Trek series debuted in 1966 and ran for three seasons. In the years between the show’s cancellation and the first movie, Roddenberry helped keep fan interest alive. However, Roddenberry was marginalized by Paramount after Star Trek: The Motion Picture had a disappointing box office performance. Regardless, Roddenberry went on to create Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987.

Roddenberry Entertainment is currently looking for a director to helm the project. Presumably a larger studio will also be attached to this film at a later date.
