Anthony Mackie Officially Signs on To Star in Captain America 4

Shortly after The Falcon and the Winter Soldier closed out its six-episode run with Sam Wilson officially assuming his role as the next Captain America, word got out that Marvel was developing a new film headlined by Anthony Mackie’s star-spangled Avenger. The news took everyone by surprise, including Mackie himself. But according to Deadline, Mackie has finally closed his deal to star in Captain America 4.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showrunner Malcolm Spellman is currently writing the next Cap vehicle alongside Dalan Musson, who also penned the series’ penultimate episode. Right now, the studio is presumably on the lookout for a director. However, it’s still not clear whether the film will be released as part of Phase Four or Five of the MCU.

At this point, it’s still pretty early to speculate on who else might appear in the movie. But Mackie’s Falcon and the Winter Soldier co-star, Sebastian Stan, seems like a safe bet. Another possibility is Danny Ramirez, who also showed up in the series as Joaquín Torres. In the comics, Joaquín took over for Sam as the new Falcon, and the TV show appeared to hint at a similar turn of events happening in the MCU when Sam gave him his damaged wingsuit.

One thing’s for sure: we can definitely rule out a return by Chris Evans as Steve Rogers. The former MCU mainstay is still rumored to reprise his iconic role in an upcoming Marvel project. Regardless, Deadline’s sources indicate that this isn’t it.

Marvel hasn’t announced a release date for Captain America 4.
