Taika Waititi Updates the Status of His Star Wars Movie

Director Taika Waititi is going to be busy for a long time. In addition to finishing up Thor: Love and Thunder, Waititi is developing a Flash Gordon movie and producing FX on Hulu’s Reservation Dogs. Last year, Lucasfilm announced that Waititi will also co-write and direct a Star Wars movie. While there hasn’t been much word on that project since May 2020, Waititi has finally offered an update about his Star Wars film.

While speaking with Wired UK, Waititi admitted that his Star Wars flick is still very early in development. Regardless, he and co-writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns already have a story in mind.

“It’s still in the ‘EXT. SPACE’ stage,” said Waititi. “But we’ve got a story. I’m really excited by it because it feels very me.”

“I tend to go down that little sincerity alleyway in my films,” added Waititi. “I like to fool the viewer into thinking ‘ha it’s this’ and then them going, ‘Damn it, you made me feel something!’”

Lucasfilm hasn’t revealed when Waititi’s film will take place, or if it has a release date. For now, only Patty Jenkins’ Star Wars: Rogue Squadron film has a place on the calendar: May 6, 2022.
