James Gunn Sheds Some Light on the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special

It’s been over four years since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hit theaters, but now that The Suicide Squad is in his rear window, director James Gunn is getting ready to make his Marvel return. While speaking with Collider, Gunn indicated that both Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will begin filming this fall. He also noted that the Holiday Special will actually be important to the next sequel.

“It’s in-canon, it’s about the Guardians, you’re gonna learn stuff that you need to learn before Volume 3, and it’s great I’m really happy with it,” said Gunn.

“I’m gonna film it at the same time as the movie,” added Gunn. “I’m using a lot of the same sets, the same actors obviously, so we’re filming simultaneously with the film. But it’s gonna have to be edited and finished sooner.”

Gunn also revealed another key detail about the special: it will be under 40 minutes. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, and Pom Klementieff will all be back for the sequel and the Holiday Special.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will hit Disney+ in December 2022. Additionally, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will arrive in theaters on May 5, 2023.
