Daniel Casey Will Write the Russos’ Battle of the Planets Movie

Two years have passed since Joe and Anthony Russo announced that they were producing a new big-screen take on Battle of the Planets. Now, the movie finally has a writer. Collider brings word that Daniel Casey will pen the screenplay for G-Force’s U.S. theatrical debut.

Casey co-wrote the script for F9, which finally hit theaters last month. He previously did some uncredited rewrites on 10 Cloverfield Lane. He also worked on an adaptation of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ Kill or Be Killed. However, it’s not clear if this film is still in the works.

Casey will also lead the creative development on a potential Battle of the Planets franchise. Theoretically, it will comprise an entire shared universe of films. The Russos will produce these films through their AGBO banner alongside Tatsunoko Productions. Additionally, the brothers issued a new statement welcoming Casey aboard:

“We are thrilled to be working with a collaborator of Dan’s caliber on this beloved property,” said the Russos. “His passion, attention to detail, and thirst for innovation will no doubt delight fans of the IP while making a thoughtful introduction for newcomers. He is pioneer at heart and the perfect partner as we set out to lay the foundation of a universe which will engage audiences on a meaningful level and across the media landscape.”

Battle of the Planets debuted in 1978 as an adaptation of the Japanese series Science Ninja Team Gatchaman. The anime followed the adventures of G-Force, a group of five teenagers charged with defending Earth from interstellar threats. Chiefest among these was Zoltar, a being from the planet Spectra. The team’s members also famously wore bird-like costumes and traveled through space in a ship called the Phoenix.
