Report: Warner Bros. Narrows Down Its Casting Picks For Batgirl

Back in May, Warner Bros. signed Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah to helm the Batgirl film. Now, a new report suggests that three to four actresses remain in the running to play Barbara Gordon on the big screen.

According to Deadline, Zoey Deutch, Isabella Merced, Leslie Grace, and Haley Lu Richardson are the finalists. However, the report also states that Richardson may have already dropped out. Warner Bros. will reportedly test these actresses this week before making a final decision.

While it’s unclear if Batgirl will maintain any continuity with Matt Reeves’ The Batman, the casting choices suggest otherwise. At this point, it’s all speculation.

In the comics, Barbara Gordon is the daughter of Batman’s ally, Commissioner James Gordon. Inspired by Batman’s example, and also by her father’s heroism, Barbara adopted the Batgirl persona as a crime fighter. However, Barbara was shot by the Joker in Batman: The Killing Joke, and she was left a paraplegic. Regardless, Barbara reinvented herself as a hacker called Oracle and remained active as a heroine.

Barbara was reinstated as Batgirl in 2011’s New 52 reboot, although her Killing Joke backstory remains intact. Barbara is currently acting as both Batgirl and Oracle in the current DC continuity.

Batgirl will be produced as a HBO Max original movie.
