Zack Snyder Reveals Details For His Next Movie, Rebel Moon

Two months after Army of the Dead hit Netflix and became one of the platform’s most-watched original films. Zack Snyder is readying his next big project for Netflix. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder is currently developing a new sci-fi film called Rebel Moon.

The film picks up on the outskirts of the galaxy, where a peaceful colony on a far-flung planet finds itself under siege by a tyrannical ruler known as Balisarius. In an effort to defend themselves, the colony’s inhabitants send a young woman with a “mysterious” past to travel to other worlds to find warriors who will help them.

Snyder is working on Rebel Moon’s script with Army of the Dead co-writer Shay Hatten and 300 co-writer Kurt Johnstad. The premise comes from a story that Snyder and Johnstad cooked up together, and it sounds like they are drawing from an eclectic range of influences. Plus, Snyder and his cohorts are already thinking about the movie’s franchise potential.

“This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan,” said Snyder. “It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.”

Snyder originally began developing the film as a standalone Star Wars entry shortly after Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012. Additionally, Snyder toyed with the idea of turning the project into a TV series. But thanks to the success of Army of the Dead, it’s about to get a second chance.

“I’ve spent the last two or three years building out this universe,” added Snyder. “Every corner has to be painted in. I’ve been doing designs, constantly drawing and really cultivating its fertile ground to make this world fully realized.”

Snyder is hoping to start production on Rebel Moon in early 2022.
