Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Has Started Filming

Arthur Curry is officially on his way back to Atlantis. Earlier today, director James Wan announced that Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is now in production. Wan marked the first day of filming on the sequel with a post on Instagram. Check it out for yourself below.

Wan’s photo displays an icy cavern as well as a clapboard that confirms the film’s working title, Necrus. Die-hard DC fans might recognize this as the name of another underwater city that was introduced in an issue of Aquaman back in the ‘60s. Also called “The Black City,” Necrus could only exist on the material plane for short periods of time, and it never appeared in the same location twice. The city was also ruled by a tyrant named Mongo, who led his militaristic society to war against Atlantis for its leniency toward surface dwellers. There’s a slim possibility that Wan might be hinting that Mongo may be the new film’s villain. But since the character seems to be very obscure, it’s actually pretty unlikely.

Jason Momoa will reprise his role as Arthur in the sequel, and he also contributed to the film’s screenplay. Amber Heard will also return as Mera, alongside Patrick Wilson as Orm, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as David Kane/Black Manta. So far, the only new addition to the cast is former Game of Thrones star Pilou Asbæk. Regardless, the identity of his character remains a mystery for now.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom hits theaters on December 16, 2022.
