Matthew Robinson Will Write Patty Jenkins’ Star Wars: Rogue Squadron Movie

During last year’s Disney Investor Day, Lucasfilm made the surprise announcement that Wonder Woman helmer Patty Jenkins will direct a Star Wars: Rogue Squadron movie. There hasn’t been many updates since December. However, that changed earlier today. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Matthew Robinson has signed on to write the script for Rogue Squadron.

Robinson co-wrote and co-directed The Invention of Lying alongside Ricky Gervais in 2009. More recently, Robinson wrote the Love and Monsters movie starring Dylan O’Brien last year. Additionally, Robinson has scripts for the Edge of Tomorrow sequel and a remake of Little Shop of Horrors in development.

Lucasfilm hasn’t shared much information about Rogue Squadron‘s story or its place in the Star Wars timeline. Regardless, Jenkins has shared her intention to make  “greatest fighter pilot movie ever made.”

THR also notes that it’s unclear how long Robinson has been working on the script. Reportedly, the plan is still to begin preproduction this year with filming to begin in 2022. There’s also a lot riding on this film’s success, as it will be the first Star Wars theatrical film since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019.

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron will hit theaters on December 22, 2023.
