David Harbour Has Ideas For New Red Guardian Stories After Black Widow

If the early reviews for Black Widow are anything to go on, David Harbour’s Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian is one of the standout new additions to the Marvel mythos. Most of us won’t know the full nature of Red Guardian’s fate until the film opens next month. However, it sounds like Harbour already has a few ideas about where Alexei could show up next in the MCU.

Since Black Widow takes place between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, some fans are wondering how Natasha’s Russian “family” fared during the Blip and where they were during the final battle with Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. During a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Harbour was asked about his character’s whereabouts during this epic showdown. Surprisingly, Harbour revealed that he and director Cate Shortland have already put some thought into this answer.

“I mean the fun thing about this entire thing is that we go back and we build out this structure for something new,” said Harbour. “So all this new content with a lot of information about the movies that moves forward with these other projects, the new Phase. And you also get to introduce these new characters. Cate Shortland and I had all kinds of speculations about where Red Guardian is, and what happens to him. There were a lot of fun ideas that we had, but I haven’t asked [Kevin] Feige himself. I’ll do that later.”

Harbour has previously expressed his desire to see the Winter Guard join the ranks of the MCU. And since those Russian superheroes have returned in the pages of Jason Aaron’s Avengers run, there’s no time like the present to make this happen. Regardless, we’ll have to wait and see if Feige is open to Harbour’s suggestions.

Black Widow hits theaters and Disney+ Premier Access on July 9.
