Black Widow’s IMAX Release Gets an Expanded Aspect Ratio

The MCU’s return to theaters is just over a month away. And to sweeten the deal for moviegoers, Marvel is offering a little something extra for anyone who sees Black Widow in IMAX. According to Deadline, IMAX theaters will show the film with an expanded aspect ratio made possible by their massive screens.

Fans will be able to experience Black Widow at a ratio of 1.90:1. And since several scenes in the movie have been formatted exclusively for IMAX theaters, anyone who watches the film in this format will see details that other theatergoers can’t. Specifically, 22 minutes of scenes will have a picture size that’s 26% larger than that of the average theater.

Obviously, this isn’t the first time that Marvel has utilized IMAX tech on their movies. In 2018, Avengers: Infinity War became the first major Hollywood production to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras. This trend would continue with Avengers: Endgame the following year.

“Marvel and IMAX have a really great partnership and we think we each complement each other’s brand,” said IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond in a new statement. “We try to do something for the fans to celebrate the relationship,”

Black Widow hits theaters and Disney+ Premier Access on July 9.
