Dwayne Johnson Confirms Black Adam Has Finally Started Shooting

Black Adam, the movie centered on Shazam/Captain Marvel’s nemesis, has been in the works for so long it sometimes felt like it would never become real. But Dwayne Johnson has wanted this superhero role for a long time, and he never gave up on it. Now that Shazam! itself tops many fans’ lists of DC movies, extending that part of the universe surely feels like a much better bet. Johnson recently announced a scheduled release date for the movie, and yesterday, he confirmed that shooting began. Check out his Instagram post for a look at the day one slate.

Johnson originally took the role back in 2007, when director Peter Segal (Get Smart) was going to direct Shazam! In that incarnation, Black Adam would have been the primary villain. Johnson credits Comic-Con fans who approached him during promotion for Get Smart with sparking his interest in the character. Later, rumors had Black Adam appearing in a possible Suicide Squad sequel before James Gunn became attached.

The current incarnation of the film will likely focus on Adam as more anti-hero than villain. And it features the Justice Society of America. Pierce Brosnan plays Dr. Fate, with Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, and Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher.
