Paramount Moves Dungeons & Dragons and New Star Trek Film To 2023

Earlier today, Paramount announced major changes to its release calendar that includes new premieres for Snake Eyes as well as its upcoming Top Gun and Mission: Impossible films. However, it looks like the studio’s Dungeons & Dragons reboot is moving as well. Originally scheduled for May 27, 2022, D&D will now hit theaters almost a year later on March 3, 2023. But that’s not even the biggest surprise. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount has also earmarked a new Star Trek movie for June 9, 2023.

Paramount+ has been the go-to destination for all things Star Trek for the past three years. Regardless, the franchise’s big screen future has been in question ever since Star Trek Beyond bowed in 2016. Since then, the studio has taken pitches from a variety of different filmmakers. S.J. Clarkson and Noah Hawley were attached to helm their own Star Trek features at different points. Unfortunately, both of these were shelved. The studio also expressed interest in a film based on an idea from Quentin Tarantino, but this ultimately went nowhere.

Most recently, Paramount enlisted Star Trek: Discovery writer Kalinda Vazquez to write another Star Trek movie. But according to io9, this won’t be the film that hits theaters in 2023. Instead, it will be a different entry produced by J.J. Abrams, who previously directed the first two installments in the rebooted “Kelvin” timeline.

Meanwhile, the Dungeons & Dragons movie comes from writers and directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. The film stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Regé-Jean Page, Hugh Grant, and Sophia Lillis.
