Gary Whitta Shares Concept Reel For The Last Starfighters

Nearly three years ago, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story co-writer Gary Whitta revealed his plans to revisit The Last Starfighter, one of the seminal sci-fi films of the ’80s. Whitta also noted that he is working with The Last Starfighter creator and screenwriter, Jonathan R. Betuel on the project. While the proposed movie doesn’t have a greenlight yet, Whitta has shared a look at what the future may hold.

Via Gamespot, Whitta announced on his Twitch channel that the project is tentatively called The Last Starfighters. Additionally, it will be a sequel to the 1984 movie, rather than a reboot.

“We wanted to do a sequel that kept the original in canon, and which, which continued the original storyline and honored the original,” explained Whitta.

In the original movie, Alex Rogan (Lance Guest) was recruited by Centauri (Robert Preston) to become a Starfighter and defend the Rylan Star League from the Ko-Dan Empire. Alex also decided to remain in space with his girlfriend, Maggie Gordon (Catherine Mary Stewart) as they rebuilt the Starfighter fleet. Presumably any sequel will follow up on that thread.

According to Whitta, the proposed sequel may also be closer to becoming a reality.

“We are, I believe, very very close–closer than anyone has ever been to making a new Last Starfighter fighter movie, like right on the one yard line,” noted Whitta. “After pushing the boulder uphill for years we are very, very, very close. I can’t really say anything more. Other than that, you know because it’s there’s all stuff happening behind the scenes now, like there’s things I can’t tell you but we are very, very close, I believe it will happen.”

Whitta also released a Last Starfighters sizzle reel, with concept art by Matt Allsopp. Chris Tilton scored the video and included a new arrangement of Craig Safan’s original Last Starfighter theme. You can watch the clip below.
