Why Zack Snyder’s Justice League Features R-Rated Violence

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is finally out. The movie debuted a couple of days ago, presenting Snyder’s original vision for Justice League to the world. Unlike the light-hearted theatrical version of 2017’s blockbuster, the new adaptation for the ensemble of DC’s superheroes is much more brutal, like in the terrorist scene involving Wonder Woman. As such, the new cut of the movie has been rated R for “violence and some language.” In explaining the reason behind his choice, director Zack Snyder talked about a “pure exercise in creative freedom,”

“Let’s just do it the exact way we would if there was no ratings board,” he said while talking with Variety. “Let’s not use any second guessing. Let’s just do it the way we think is the coolest. That was the philosophical approach.”

The director also added that the movie depicts what would happen if humans would take on demi-gods with superpowers.

“I always feel that the consequence is important to me, that there’s real stakes,” Snyder said. “It still is abstract, you know. These are gods fighting men. Which is also part of the point. We can’t really fight them. Humans can’t really fight them.”

He then explained that one of the main merits of his work is enacting real repercussions for those superheroes’ actions.

“If the superhero smashes the car, and the whole car explodes, and you just see the guy kind of crawl out of the wreckage, and you’re like, oh okay, it’s still PG-13, the fact you don’t show the blood is a technicality. The violence is still there. I want a true depiction of the violence. I don’t want to sugarcoat it.”

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is finally available on HBO Max.
