Kalinda Vazquez Will Write Paramount’s Next Star Trek Movie

The Star Trek Universe is on the verge of big things over at Paramount+. But while the brand is currently thriving on the small screen, its big screen future has been nebulous ever since Star Trek Beyond hit theaters in 2016. There have been a handful of false starts since then, with everyone from Noah Hawley to Quentin Tarantino flirting with the idea of putting their own stamp on the franchise. However, it looks like Paramount is searching in-house for a writer to tackle their next Star Trek film. According to Deadline, Star Trek: Discovery scribe Kalinda Vazquez will pen the movie’s script.

Being involved with the Star Trek Universe seems to be Vazquez’s birthright. She was named after a character named Kelinda who appeared in an episode of the original Star Trek series in 1968. Apart from Discovery, Vazquez has also written for Star Trek: Short Treks, Fear the Walking Dead, and Marvel’s Runaways. She’s currently collaborating with Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin on a TV adaptation of Roger Zelazny’s Roadmarks. That series will eventually air HBO.

It’s not clear what Vazquez and Paramount are planning for the next theatrical Star Trek adventure. But per Deadline’s sources, this new pact represents a “blind deal” between her and the studio. J.J. Abrams, who directed Paramount’s first two Star Trek movies set in the Kelvin timeline, will produce the new film through his Bad Robot banner.

Paramount still hasn’t shared a release window for their next Star Trek movie.

Which corners of the Star Trek Universe should be explored in Vazquez’s film? Let us know in the comment section below!
