Warriors Collide in Bloody Mortal Kombat Red-Band Trailer

After several months of anticipation, Warner Bros. has finally released an official trailer for Mortal Kombat. The plot is almost universally known by whoever has ever played the fighting game. It pits some of the Earth’s mightiest warriors against their equivalents from the other MK realms. The trailer introduces Liu Kang, Sonya, Raiden, and all the others who will collide in the deadly tournament. Sure, there’s a slight twist with the introduction of Cole Young to the story, but most of the rest of the iconic characters are all there.

The video also shows a few clips from the birth of Scorpion, the real mascot for the franchise. The movie will explore the character’s origins, but after that, it will focus on his never-ending battle with Sub-Zero. And much to the delight of Paul Anderson’s Mortal Kombat fans, the trailer hints more than once to the original soundtrack from the 1995 movie. And yes, there are fatalities.

Simon McQuoid directed the movie written by Greg Russo together with Dave Callaham. The official synopsis for the Mortal Kombat reboot reads:

“MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld’s Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family’s safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark.

“Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana—the immense power from within his soul—in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?”

Mortal Kombat will debut hit both theaters and HBO Max on April 16.
