Back in October, Constantin Films and Sony’s Screen Gems announced a new theatrical adaptation of Capcom’s Resident Evil video game series. Unlike the previous six films starring Milla Jovovich, the new movie is reportedly staying more true to the games. Now, Deadline is reporting that Resident Evil has a release date: September 3. Assuming that theaters will be open by then, of course.
Kaya Scodelario will play Claire Redfield, with Robbie Amell (Upload) as her brother, Chris Redfield. Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and the Wasp) will also co-star as Jill Valentine. Additionally, Avan Jogia (Zombieland: Double Tap) will play Leon S. Kennedy, with Tom Hopper (The Umbrella Academy) as Albert Wesker, and Neal McDonough (Yellowstone) as William Birkin. Donal Logue will play Police Chief Brian Adams.

The storyline appears to be based on the first two Resident Evil video games. While Chris and Jill encounter zombies at a remote mansion, Claire and Leon struggle to get out of Raccoon City alive. It doesn’t seem to leave much room for the events of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. But we’ll see how it plays out on screen.
Johannes Roberts is writing and directing the new Resident Evil film. A trailer should arrive in a few months.
