Eternals Director Chloé Zhao Will Reboot Dracula As a Sci-Fi Western

90 years ago, Universal Pictures adapted Bram Stocker’s Dracula with Bela Lugosi in the title role. In the decades since, Universal has put forth other adaptations as well. But now, Universal is taking Dracula into some uncharted territory.

Via Deadline, Universal Pictures has hired Eternals director Chloé Zhao to write, produce, and direct a new take on Dracula. Zhao and Universal are re-envisioning Dracula as “an original futuristic sci-fi western.”

Universal Pictures President Peter Cramer also confirmed the news with an official statement.

“Chloé’s singular lens shines a light on stories of the overlooked and misunderstood,” said Cramer. “We are thrilled to be working with her as she reimagines one of the most iconic outsider characters ever created.”

“I’ve always been fascinated by vampires and the concept of the Other they embody,” added Zhao. “I’m very excited to work with Donna, Peter and the team at Universal to reimagine such a beloved character.”

Zhao’s most recent film, Nomadland, also deals with Western elements. Additionally, Nomadland earned Zhao Golden Globe nominations for best screenplay and best director, as well as best picture (drama). It also seems likely to earn some Oscar nominations as well.
