The fate of Black Panther 2 has been up in the air ever since Chadwick Boseman passed away in August. But now, it sounds like Marvel has figured out how to move forward with the upcoming sequel. According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision newsletter, the studio has set a new start date for the movie. Black Panther 2 will commence production in July 2021.
Additionally, Marvel and director Ryan Coogler have begun the casting process for the new film as well. Tenoch Huerta has apparently come aboard the sequel as one of its villains. However, the report doesn’t specify which character he’s playing. Huerta is perhaps best known for his role as Rafael Caro Quintero on Narcos: Mexico. He also headlined the Spanish-language TV series Blue Demon for three seasons and had a small role in the James Bond film Spectre in 2015.

Marvel’s original plan was to start shooting Black Panther 2 next March. Of course, this was before Boseman’s death sent shockwaves throughout the entertainment industry. Filming on the sequel is expected to last “upwards of six months,” in contrast with the first film’s four-month shoot. At this point, it’s still not clear how the studio will handle the character of T’Challa in the wake of Boseman’s passing. But in a recent interview with People, Angela Bassett (Queen Ramonda) endorsed the idea of Letitia Wright’s Shuri becoming the new protector of Wakanda.
Black Panther 2 is currently set to be released on May 6, 2022, but this date is subject to change.
