10 Cloverfield Lane’s Dan Trachtenberg Will Direct the Next Predator Film

Four years ago, Dan Trachtenberg made his feature directing debut with 10 Cloverfield Lane, which earned solid reviews and hinted at big things in his filmmaking future. But while Trachtenberg has been attached to a few high-profile projects over the years, he hasn’t actually made another movie since then. Hopefully, that’s about to change. Deadline is reporting that 20th Century Studios has recruited Trachtenberg to direct a new Predator film.

The Predator series began in 1987 with Arnold Schwarzenegger headlining the original film. A sequel followed in 1990, although this failed to meet the standard set by its predecessor. After two Alien vs. Predator crossover films hit theaters in 2004 and 2007, 20th Century Fox tried breathing new life into the franchise in 2010 with Predators, which featured an all-star cast and Nimród E. Antal in the director’s chair. In 2018, Shane Black, co-wrote and directed his own reboot, The Predator. Although this film was met with lukewarm reception, it eventually became the highest-grossing entry in the entire series.

Trachtenberg has primarily worked in TV since 10 Cloverfield Lane premiered in 2016. Last year, he directed the pilot episode for Amazon’s The Boys. He was also briefly in line to direct Sony’s Uncharted movie before he left and was replaced by Ruben Fleischer. Trachtenberg’s Predator film will be 20th Century Studios’ first installment in the series following their acquisition by Disney.

Additionally, the studio has also hired Patrick Aison to write the new film. Aison has previously worked as a writer and producer on shows like Wayward Pines, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, and Treadstone. According to Deadline’s sources, his script won’t acknowledge the events of Black’s movie. But it’s still not clear if this will be another hard reboot.
