William Hurt Talks About General ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross’ Role In Black Widow

Next year, William Hurt will reprise his role as General Thaddeus E. “Thunderbolt” Ross in the Black Widow solo movie. The film takes place shortly after Captain America: Civil War, and Natasha Romanoff is on the run after ultimately siding with Cap. Via Comic Book Movie, Hurt explained Ross’ motivations in an excerpt from Black Widow: The Official Movie Special Book.

“Well, his ego has to match the muscles of Hulk,” said Hurt. “I do think about that fatigue setting in after he just made this big move to control the Avengers, and it created a huge problem and a huge rift. I think in Ross’ head he’s probably a self-fantasizing person…[And] he imagined, back when he was contending with Hulk, that he was the conquering soldier going around the world, but things have gotten more complex and difficult.”

“There’s always a sense of dignity to what he’s doing, but I think he’s the soldier on the last hill at this point,” continued Hurt. “He’s surrounded and he’s just trying to protect his way of life. The way he can strike back against the changing world would be by capturing Natasha Romanoff.”

Hurt originated his role as General Ross in Incredible Hulk, and reprised the part in Civil War, as well as Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Scarlett Johansson will reprise her role as Natasha at least one more time in the Black Widow. That film will also introduce viewers to Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, a rival Black Widow and the closest thing that Natasha has to a sister. Additionally, David Harbour co-stars as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian.  O-T Fagbenle  also appears as Rick Mason, alongside Ray Winstone as Dreykov, and Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff.

Black Widow will hit theaters on May 7, 2021.
