Earlier this year, Paramount Pictures and Hasbro Studios commissioned two separate live-action Transformers movies by screenwriters James Vanderbilt and Joby Harold. According to Deadline, the studios have chosen to go forward with Harold’s script. Additionally, Steven Caple Jr. is apparently the top choice to direct the new Transformers movie.
Deadline reports that Caple is currently in negotiations to helm the Transformers film, which will be a new take on the franchise. The film is also expected to be completely separate from the continuity created by Michael Bay’s Transformers movies.
Previously, Caple directed Creed 2, The Land of Misfits, A Different Tree, and The Land. He also helmed two episodes of Grown-ish.

Paramount and Hasbro Studios are still collaborating on a stand-alone animated Transformers prequel movie. Toy Story 4 director Josh Cooley will helm that film. Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari, the screenwriters of Ant-Man and the Wasp, will write the script. Netflix’s Transformers: War For Cybertron animated series also covers similar story territory. However, it’s unclear how the animated series and the prequel movie will differ from each other.
