The Tomb Raider Sequel Has Been Taken off of MGM’s Release Slate

Earlier this month, Alicia Vikander shared her hope that the Tomb Raider sequel would begin filming in 2021. That may still happen, but the movie no longer has a release date. According to The Wrap, MGM finally pulled Tomb Raider 2 from its March 19, 2021 date. After the pandemic, it was never going to make that date. However, MGM opted to keep the sequel off of the schedule instead of giving it a new release date or window.

Ben Wheatley (High-Rise) was named as the director of the sequel in September 2019. Tomb Raider 2 was originally slated to be filmed this year. Regardless, those plans were changed by the novel coronavirus pandemic. MGM has yet to definitively set a new start date.

The 2018 Tomb Raider movie was a reboot of the franchise with Vikander taking over the role of Lara Croft from Angelina Jolie. That film also took its cues from the video game series’ reboot, which re-envisioned Lara as a younger adventurer. The movie also revealed that the organization known as Trinity may have been manipulating Lara from the start. Presumably the sequel will deal with that lingering plot point. It’s also unclear if any cast members beside Vikander will return for the sequel.
