Ernie Hudson Teases Ghostbusters: Afterlife’s Connections to the Original Films

Like many other Ghostbusters fans, Ernie Hudson wasn’t holding out much hope for a third film starring himself and his fellow cast members from the first two movies. For years, development on a new Ghostbusters installment was plagued by a number of setbacks, including the death of Harold Ramis and Bill Murray’s well-documented reluctance to come back. Sony’s all-female reboot appeared to confirm that the original cast had officially stopped trying to make another sequel. But now, Ghostbusters: Afterlife is on the way. And while speaking with Yes Have Some (via Bleeding Cool), Hudson discussed this excitement for the film.

Afterlife’s teaser trailer only hinted at its link to the older movies. Regardless, Hudson promised that these connections are more pronounced in the upcoming sequel. He also remembered his first conversation about the film with original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman and his son, Afterlife helmer Jason Reitman.

“It was even before I got the script,” said Hudson. “I got a call from [director] Ivan Reitman and Jason, we talk, and I go, ‘OK, this is really going to happen.’ Because there have been so many announcements and so many things that fell apart, it wasn’t until I got the script and read the script that I thought, ‘OK, not only is it happening, but this is really good. It’s really in line with what the fans have been hoping for, and it really ties into the first two movies.”

Hudson also shared his thoughts on the reboot, which divided fans and critics when it opened in 2016.

“I like the movie with the ladies, but it was kind of a different take on it,” added Hudson. “So once I got the [Afterlife] script, I began to get excited about it and felt like I knew something definite. But up until then, it was still ‘if, maybe, and whatever.'”

Ghostbusters: Afterlife will hit theaters on March 5, 2021.
