Last year, Olivia Wilde made her directorial debut with Booksmart, which earned rave reviews and cemented her status as a filmmaker on the rise. Now, it looks like she’s about to make the jump to the superhero genre. Deadline is reporting that Sony has hired Wilde to co-write and direct a movie centering on a female Marvel hero. Additionally, rumor has it that Spider-Woman will be the film’s main character.
Before turning her attention to directing, Wilde made a name for herself with her role on House and appearances in films like TRON: Legacy and Cowboys & Aliens. Wilde is also prepping her next directorial effort, Don’t Worry, Darling. That film is described as a psychological thriller with Dakota Johnson, Florence Pugh, Shia LaBeouf, and Chris Pine slated to star. New Line Cinema recently secured the movie’s distribution rights.
Wilde will write her Marvel movie alongside her frequent collaborator, Katie Silberman. According to Deadline’s report, Gary Spinelli also wrote a previous draft of the film’s script. Amy Pascal will produce the movie with Rachel O’Connor serving as an executive producer.

It’s still not clear which incarnation of Spider-Woman will be the film’s headliner. The list of possibilities includes everyone from Jessica Drew to Gwen Stacy. Regardless, Sony is developing a handful of other films centering on female characters in Spider-Man’s orbit. Other projects in the works include Silk, Madame Web, Black Cat, Silver Sable, and an animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse spinoff.
Sony has yet to announce a release date for Wilde’s potential Spider-Woman movie.
