20th Century Studios’ The New Mutants doesn’t have the luxury of including any mainstream mutant characters that non-comic book fans might recognize. Regardless, the filmmakers recruited a group of talented young actors to bring these characters to life. In a new featurette, the cast gives a quick, spoiler-free run-down of their upcoming big screen nightmare.
In just 60 seconds, the actors speed-talk their way through The New Mutants’ story: five teenagers with special abilities are monitored in a secret facility. Leading this operation is Dr. Reyes, who also presides over therapy sessions where the kids discuss their past traumas. Unfortunately, it isn’t long before they discover that Reyes plans on keeping them around for the long haul.

The featurette also highlights some new footage from the film. Most notably, we get to see Charlie Heaton’s Sam Guthrie (a.k.a. Cannonball) using his jet-propulsion powers to bounce around a playground. Another shot finds Blu Hunt’s Danielle Moonstar/Mirage struggling in a hospital bed. And as Maisie Williams, who co-stars as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, remarks, “it only gets worse from there.”
Barring any further delays, The New Mutants will hit theaters on August 28. Tickets will reportedly go on sale on August 18.
