The Team Powers Up in the Latest New Mutants Promo

There’s a pretty good chance that The New Mutants won’t actually hit theaters this month due to the coronavirus. Regardless, Disney’s 20th Century Studios is still churning out new promos for the movie. The newest spot highlights the impressive VFX required to bring the characters’ diverse assortment of superpowers to life.

In keeping with the film’s dark tone, the latest promo puts emphasis on the instability of the young mutants’ gifts. You can watch it for yourself via The New Mutants’ official Twitter account below.

Nearly every character gets to show off their powers in the new teaser. Standout moments include Cannonball using his blast field and Sunspot’s transforming himself into a human solar flare. There’s a cool shot of Anya Taylor-Joy’s Magik sprouting organic armor and wielding her iconic sword. We also see more of Alice Braga’s Cecilia Reyes, the doctor hiding ulterior motives for keeping the mutants locked in a secret facility. But whatever secrets she has don’t hold a candle to the Demon Bear, who also makes an appearance in the promo.

Unfortunately, The New Mutants’ upcoming big screen appearance is likely a one-and-done deal thanks to the Disney and Fox merger. However, the film sounds like it will feature references to the larger X-Men universe. Writer/director Josh Boone has said that characters like Professor X will get a shoutout. Plus, a recent synopsis confirmed that Magik is Colossus’ younger sister, just like in the comics. But it’s not clear if their familiar relationship will be mentioned in the movie.

The New Mutants is still targeting an August 28 premiere date.
