Jason Reitman is Already Thinking About a Ghostbusters: Afterlife Sequel

In an alternate universe, moviegoers are getting ready to celebrate the original Ghostbusters cast’s return to the franchise when Ghostbusters: Afterlife hits theaters next month. But unfortunately, those of us living here in the darkest timeline are still dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, which recently prompted Sony to delay the film to next year. Of course, the shutdown hasn’t been all bad for Ghostbusters fans. For the latest installment in his Reunited at Home series, Josh Gad rounded up Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and more cast members to wax nostalgic about the classic 1984 movie that started it all. Gad also welcomed Afterlife director Jason Reitman to tease the upcoming sequel. And surprisingly, Reitman shared that Afterlife might not be the end of the road for the franchise.

During the virtual roundtable discussion, Reitman revealed that he has plans for another Ghostbusters adventure. In fact, it sounds like he’s already started writing it.

“I can’t tell you anything, but we are working on another installment,” said Reitman. “We have a little bit more time, and look, as a director, I’ve never had this opportunity to actually take a pause and breathe and look at the movie again.”

Reitman is taking over the Ghostbusters series from his father, Ivan, who helmed the first film and its 1989 sequel. Naturally, the ongoing Hollywood shutdowns are affecting myriad productions. But Reitman insisted that he’s been using this “extraordinarily valuable” time to finish post-production on Afterlife.

“I’ve been spending my days editing Ghostbusters, so that’s where I’ve been,” added Reitman.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife will open on March 5, 2021.
