Playing Batman on film can be life-changing for actors. However, Robert Pattinson was already enjoying plenty of good fortune in his career before he became the latest actor to don the famous cape and cowl. While speaking with Total Film, Pattinson revealed exactly how found out he’d landed the coveted lead role in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Pattinson got this fateful call just as he was preparing to work with another veteran of the Batman franchise. Incidentally, it was “the morning of [his] first day” on Christopher Nolan’s Tenet.
“It was kind of insane,” said Pattinson. “It was a very, very intense weekend. That was a crazy way to start Chris’ film. I think I was doing the screen test, as well, on the Saturday before I started.”
In addition to his Batman casting and his work on Tenet, he also earned rave reviews for his performances in High Life and The Lighthouse. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Pattinson is currently holed up in London until The Batman gets the greenlight to resume filming. And while Pattinson lamented the circumstances that led to the shutdown, he confessed that he could use the break.

“We’d really gotten into a really good rhythm as well, so it’s kind of strange to be pausing,” noted Pattinson. “But, again, it’s a hard movie. I mean, obviously it’s Batman, so it’s kind of nice. I basically went straight from Chris [Nolan’s] movie into that. And, yeah, I was feeling a little bit loopy anyway. So having some time off is not the worst thing in the world. But hopefully it’ll be sooner rather than later that everything is hopefully in a better place.”
There’s been some debate over whether Tenet will keep its July 17 premiere date in light of the COVID-19 outbreak. But if Warner Bros. decides to delay its release, it could potentially take the August 14 date currently occupied by Wonder Woman 1984.
The Batman will hit theaters on October 1, 2021.
