Wonder Woman 1984 Director Rules Out Diana/Cheetah Romance

Early trailers for Wonder Woman 1984 have teased that the highly anticipated sequel will follow the comics by introducing Barbara Ann Minerva as Diana’s friend before she adopts her Cheetah persona and becomes Wonder Woman’s greatest enemy. However, anyone expecting their friendship to be a precursor to a blossoming romance shouldn’t get their hopes up. Director Patty Jenkins has just confirmed that she isn’t currently interested in re-imagining Diana and Cheetah as lovers.

Jenkins cleared the air in a new interview with SFX (via CBR), citing the return of Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor as the reason behind this decision.

“It might have [happened] in a different storyline,” said Jenkins. “But because this storyline was so clearly about Steve coming back, the whole story was about Steve. It’s all a love story with Steve. There wasn’t room for two for Diana.”

Technically, it doesn’t sound like Jenkins isn’t ruling out the possibility of Diana and Cheetah ever getting together. But in the comics they were only ever friends before frenemies. For now, Wonder Woman 1984 will primarily deal with how Diana reacts to Steve’s sudden reappearance after his apparent death at the end of the first movie. The inclusion of a love triangle between the three characters might have distracted from this narrative arc.
