Ever since the Snyder Cut was announced almost two weeks ago, a number of DC fans have called on Warner Bros. to let David Ayer re-cut his original Suicide Squad as he originally intended it to be released. Ayer hasn’t shied away from expressing his openness to this idea. In fact, he even insisted that it would be “easy” to finish. Additionally, Ayer has offered a bit more insight into how his version of the movie would differ from the theatrical cut.
Ayer confirmed via Twitter that the primary difference between his cut of Suicide Squad and the theatrical version would be in its tone. After a fan complimented him on the first trailer for the film that premiered at San Diego Comic-Con in 2015, Ayer shared that this early look at the movie perfectly captured the tone he wanted to convey. Unfortunately, this was a few months before the harsh backlash against Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Criticisms against that film’s lack of humor apparently prompted WB to re-evaluate its upcoming superhero slate and minimize Ayer’s level of input during Suicide Squad‘s editing process. Ayer also said that the positive response to 20th Century Fox’s Deadpool played a role in this as well. You can read what he had to say below.

It remains to be seen whether the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad will eventually make its way to HBO Max. But in the meantime, Warner Bros. is gearing up to release James Gunn’s soft reboot, The Suicide Squad on August 6, 2021. Gunn has repeatedly insisted that the ongoing coronavirus pandemic isn’t halting post-production on his new film.
